Finding a great photographer isn't hard, but do it early. The best wedding photographers have great reputations and are booked way in advance, therefore it's important that you make your search for a photographer among your first tasks. Nine months to a year in advance should be plenty. As you meet with photographers, consider their styles, their demeanor (you're going to spend a lot of quality time with them!) and feedback from other couples. Look through their portfolios, where you'll find only their best shots,  but also ask for references. Prices range from $500 to upwards of $5,000 depending on where you live, the length of time you'll need the photographer and what kind of albums who want and how many photos you'd like.
